Forklift weighing on demand
How does on-demand weighing with a forklift work?
An on-demand weighing system for forklifts consists of two main components: a pair of weighing sleeves that slide over the forklift’s existing forks, and a separate display unit mounted in the driver’s cab.
The process in practice:
- Sliding on: The operator attaches the weighing sleeves to the forklift’s forks. This takes less than 60 seconds and requires no tools.
- Weighing: The forklift lifts the load as usual. The indicator displays the weight in real time.
- Recording or transmission: The weight is recorded manually or transmitted automatically to a WMS or ERP system via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or a mobile connection.
- Removal: The sleeves are removed within seconds. The forklift truck returns to full operational capacity without any weighing equipment attached.
The weighing sleeves contain the load cells – the precision sensors that measure the weight. They are wirelessly connected to the cab indicator, meaning there are no cables running between the forks and the cab.
Because the sleeves are slid over the existing forks rather than replacing them, the forklift’s original forks remain intact. No permanent modifications are required.
Weigh when you need to. Work undisturbed when you don’t.
Unlike permanent forklift scales, an on-demand system has no impact whatsoever on the forklift’s lifting capacity, flexibility or availability when not in use. It’s only there when you need it. The rest of the time, the forklift operates as normal.
The concept addresses what many logistics companies call the ‘weighing gap’: the difference between weighing occasionally and being forced into a permanent system that restricts the forklift 24 hours a day. Most warehouses weigh at specific checkpoints: receiving, dispatch and load checking. A permanent installation creates operational restrictions for all hours in between.
Difference from fixed forklift weighing systems:
- Usage: only when necessary
- Installation: by the operator in under 60 seconds
- Forklift capacity: not affected when the sleeves are removed
- Forklift flexibility: full flexibility when not weighing
- Use across multiple locations: portable between zones and locations
- Use across multiple forklifts: switches between different forklifts as required
